Słowiński National Park

The biggest dunes in Europe are to be found at the Słowiński National Park, which is situated in Pomorskie area at the Baltic Sea coast between the areas Rowy and Leba, in the northern part of Poland. It is interesting to be mentioned that the northern boundary of the Park stretches to almost 33 kilometers of coastline.

This national park came as an idea in year 1946, after a conference held in Leba with some scientists from the cities of Gdansk and Poznan. Słowiński National Park however was created some twenty years later, in year 1967. Today it covers an area of 186 kilometers, where 102 km consist of waters and 46 km consist of forests. There is also a zone with is stricktly preserved and it covers 56 km. According to the UNESCO regulations, the park was categorized a biosphere reserve in year 1977 and its wetlands were named a Ramsar site in year 1995.

This wonderful and huge park is named after the Slavic people, who used to live in this swampy area near Lake Leba. Visitors will be glad to find an open-air museum in the village of Kluki, which shows the aspects of these people’s culture and life.

The area of the park used to be a Baltic Sea bay, but the activity of the sea created sand dunes, which later separated the bay from the Baltic Sea. The dunes are slowly moving and usually it is with three to ten meters each year. Some of the sand dunes are high and can reach even 30 meters. The highest of all is the Rowokol peak, which is a great observation point and is placed 115 meters above the sea level.

On the territory of the Słowiński National Park there are many lakes, as follows: Lebsko Lake being 72 km vast and 6.3 m deep, Gardno Lake being 25 km vast and 2.6 m deep, as well as Lake Dolgie Wielkie being 1.5 km vast and 2.9 m deep. There are also seven rivers there, which are crossing the park and the largest rivers are the Lupawa and the Leba.

The park has many deep forests as well and they are mainly consisting of pines. Actually, pines cover 80 % of the wooded areas. Besides that, there are also peat bogs. There are also more than 250 species of birds there, since the park is on the way of the birds’ migration. The birds feel very good here, as the activities of the people are very limited. Here could be seen swans and crows, erne and eagle owls, as well as many kinds of ducks. Other representatives of the fauna are deer and hare, wild pig and elk.

Tourists who come to see the Słowiński National Park will find 140 km of tourist trails, observation towers by the lakes, benches and many parking sites, hotels as well as camp sites.
